Useful tips....

  A Venice for all seasons...

Shopping
Shops are usually open from 09:00am – 12:30pm and 16:00 – 19:30 There are many small & useful shops within 5 minutes walk. At the end of Calle Michelangelo there is a bakers, small grocers, ice cream & sweets shop, stationery & newsagents, a greengrocers and wine shop! Along the fondamenta to the left of Calle Michelangelo is a fabulous butchers, deli, and take away pizza, (near the hostel). The whole of the front fondamenta of Giudecca can be walked within 15 minutes and there are more shops, banks, a post office, a pharmacy and more bars and restaurants. If you don’t feel like the walk, ,jump on a vaporetto at Zitelle and get off at Redentore or Palanca. There is a shopping trolley (Venetian style) hiding in the store box outside the bedroom terrace, which will save you a lot of lifting up and down canal bridges. If you are like us you may like to stock up on some drinks and food at the start of the holiday. We would recommend the following supermarkets; Co-op – Calle dell Olio Giudecca vaporetto stop Palanca and Billa on the main island of Venice near the vaporetto stop for San Basilio, just 4 stops away from Zitelle.

Rialto Market
This cannot be underestimated as an exciting place to visit for it's atmosphere and vibrancy let alone it's food! Great fish fruit and vegetables. The market stalls are surrounded by shops selling dairy produce, meat, pasta, confectionary and all sorts of other goodies. Open mornings only and closed on Sunday. Best days to visit are Friday and Saturday the earlier the better. No fish Mondays. Take the Vaporetto to the Rialto Bridge walk over the bridge that crosses the Grand Canal and then go straight ahead.

Some tips we've found useful....
  • If in Venice use luggage with wheels.
  • Take along good walking shoes.
  • The early bird definitely sees the best sights.
  • Whilst a map is useful, getting lost is
    much more fun.

The entrance to the Rialto Market is well sign posted...

Getting Around:
The ACTV vaporetto (water bus) is reliable and very regular. Check out the times & routes at the Zitelle stop or get a booklet at any main stop. It will cost you around €6.5 euros for each individual journey which can work out to be expensive if you make the most of this efficient way to travel. To get the best value for money, buy a 24 hour or 72 hour ticket at a vastly reduced price from either the airport Piazzale Roma, San Zaccaria or any of the main vaporetto stops. Do not travel without a ticket as you will run the risk of an on the spot fine & much embarrassment! The conductor can be paid as you board the boat.
